Friendship – To Be or Not To Be

June 4, 2010 § 1 Comment

“A Friend may well be reckoned the masterpiece of Nature.”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson~

Friendship is one of the wonderful things in this world that helps us realize we all have the potential to be happy and to make others happy. Our friends help us conquer our demons and listen to our most mundane stories as though they have never heard anything so interesting. Often times a friend is an unwitting tapestry for you to discover things about yourself that you never knew existed inside your heart and mind. These discoveries (hopefully), become what you want to give back to your friend for nothing more than having shown you those things exist.

Granted finding that friend is not always the easiest task in the world and often times it is by complete accident or happenstance that we find that friend that can change our life and outlook on everything. It can be as simple as going to the park one day looking up at the sky and saying “Wow, look how blue the sky is today.” and that could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship when someone replies with something as simple as “Yep!”

The friend who will listen to your rants or sit with you while you complain about how your dryer seems to eat your socks, but no one else’s, is infinitely more valuable than any sum of money. Money can buy you a new pair of socks or even a new dryer..a friend though, can point out that your clothes basket has a hole in it the size of a sock and if you are truly lucky they will help you find it.

There are almost 7 billion of us on this planet which makes it a hard argument for anyone claiming there is no one out there for them, so if you ever see someone that looks sad or alone say hello because that could be just enough to give that person the hope that there is someone out there just for them (and there is).

It has been my experience that those among us who tend to prefer a life of relative solitude can benefit the most from having a close/best friend to share that solitude with. We all need to share our lives and ourselves sometimes. You will discover that a true friend knows what you are thinking even in silence and it may sound corny, but friendship can be an electrical experience, a joy that is unsurpassed. I hope you seize the opportunity to find that one friend that gives you the chance to see yourself for who you really are…a friend waiting to be found…not that you have to wait.
